A subspecialty of cardiology, nuclear cardiology uses radioactive substances to diagnose and treat heart disease. In order to assess how the heart and its blood vessels work, noninvasive imaging methods are used. The myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) test, which measures blood flow to the heart muscle, is the most common nuclear imaging procedure utilized in nuclear cardiology. An MPI test involves injecting a small amount of radioactive material into the patient's bloodstream and using a special camera to see how the radiation moves through the heart and lungs.
