Pre Harvested Acreage Estimation Happy Seeder Sown Wheat: Ludhiana District

Arvind Kumar*, Anil Sood and Riendra Pateriya

In Punjab farming practices are highly mechanized. For harvesting of rice crop from the fields combine harvesting machine are used. Due to this huge amount of residue remains in the fields. For farmers it is a difficult task to planting wheat in a short window of ten to twenty days so they opt to burn residue in their fields. About 80% of the crop residue burnt by the farmers in Punjab. With the burning of rice residue gases produced creates very harmful situations for our environment and as well as for human health. Apart from the air pollution, burning of rice residue also results in loss of soil organic matter and plant nutrients and adversely affects soil health. Happy seeder is an alternate to residue burning. Happy Seeder is one of the unique techniques which are used for sowing wheat without any burning of rice residue. This technology is eco-friendly with environment for the health of soil as well as it also saves water. With the help of remote sensing and GIS the pre harvested area under happy seeder sown wheat in Ludhiana district of Punjab was estimated. High resolution data of sentinel 2A and 2B was used for the analysis. The data was taken for the analysis was from November to April for two years. The result shows that the area under happy seeder sown wheat in Ludhiana is 5.17 thousand hectares in the year 2017-18 and 57.41 thousand hectares in the year 2018-19. Growth profile for normal sown wheat and happy seeder sown wheat was also generated to see the difference between these two crops.
