Photochemical smog is a persistent air quality issue that plagues urban areas, posing significant health and
environmental risks. At its core, the formation of photochemical smog is a complex interplay of various pollutants,
with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) playing a central role. This article provides an in-depth exploration of the role
of VOCs in the genesis of photochemical smog. It examines the sources of VOCs, the intricate chemical reactions
that occur in the presence of sunlight, and the resulting impact on air quality and human health. By understanding
the contributions of VOCs to smog formation, we can better address this pressing environmental challenge and work
toward cleaner, healthier urban environments.
