Introduction: The traditional approach of fluoroscopic splanchnic nerve block has disadvantages of radiation exposure and poor recognition of vascular structures, organs and soft tissues, here we present a novel approach using ultrasound-assisted technique.
Case reports: In two cases we have used ultrasound-assisted technique with paramedian approach of needle insertion at the T12 level to target and infuse the local anesthetics in the retrocrural space which provide splanchnic nerve blockade. Both cases have great pain relief and no complication was noted.
Discussion: We concluded that this technique is likely a safer, simpler and more convenient method for performing upper abdominal sympathetic nerve block.
