Palliative sedation is an effective, accepted symptom control strategy for patients who suffer with intractable symptoms at the end of life. Palliative sedation is the most widely used term, other names include "terminal sedation," "total sedation," or "controlled sedation." All refer to the use of sedation to control refractory symptoms in patients near the end of life.
